Quartz or Granite?
When considering a remodel or a new home project, one of the big decisions is countertop selection. Much like everything in the construction industry, the options are endless. However, for the most part, it comes down to 3 materials.

-Quartz
-Laminate
Today we will discuss the first two as they really dominate new construction and the remodel market.
What is Granite?
Granite Countertops are a naturally occurring stone that is actually quarried or cut from the Earth as giant slabs of stone. Each slab is polished and then chosen and cut to the specification of the project.
Pros of Choosing Granite
Beauty - The natural movement of the stone gives granite its lasting appeal to homeowners. From wild patterns to muted stone looks, Granite has a vast array of free flowing, natural looks to choose from.
Durability - Hard as Granite. Its phrase for a reason. Granite durable and with proper care should outlive you.
Resale - Real Estate agents love to add the word Granite to a kitchen description. It can be a big selling point for prospective buyers.
Heat Safe - Yes, you can set your hot pots and pans right on the countertop.
Cons of Granite
Brittle - Because granite is a naturally occurring stone, it can have seems and cracks that may eventually give way.
Requires Maintenance - Granite must be sealed at least once a year because it is a porous, naturally occurring stone.
Stainable - Though they are durable, granite countertops most certainly can stain. Wine, Ketchup, lemon juice and even oils can stain a granite countertop.
Inconsistent Slabs - Choosing a small sample in a showroom can be worrisome. Because of the natural properties of granite, the actual slabs used may have major variations. For this reason, granite slabs should be picked out at a slab yard.
What is Quartz?
Quartz Countertops are actually made, for the most part, of the same thing as granite countertops. However, they are produced by using crushed stone and a binder. This process has resolved many of the issues seen with Granite.
Pros of Quartz
Durable - Not only is Quartz as strong as granite, but it also is less brittle. Being a resin bound stone material, is lacks the natural cracks and veining that can cause breakage.
Maintenance Free - Because of the binder used in Quartz, it isn't porous like granite. This means no sealing is necessary. This also means that it is very stain resistant.
Consistent Pattern - Picking out a sample of quartz in a showroom will be very similar to the actual slab. Quartz is often thought of as pebble patterned countertop, but with advancements in the process - it would take well trained eye to see that it isn't granite or natural marble!
Heat Safe - Just like Granite, you can place your hot pots and pans right on the countertop.
Cons of Quartz
Synthetic Look - Some varieties of quartz do have a synthetic look. This is rapidly changing as the manufacturing process advances.
Weight - Quartz is HEAVY. Granite is heavy as well, but quartz is typically heavier than even granite. That means it must be supported and must be installed by a professional/
Discoloration - Because quartz is bonded with a resin material, there is a chance that direct sunlight could discolor your countertops after a long period of time. This is seen more with very light countertops and is very difficult to notice.
Both of these materials are a great choice for a home remodel or new home construction. They are beautiful, add value and are incredibly durable. Do your research and make the decision that is right for you!
